EP 68: Renee Brinkerhoff, the Valkyrie Racer—“A Brave, Courageous Woman with a Compassionate Heart!”

Renee is a rally race driver, but not just any rally race driver--with no prior racing experience, no family background in racing, and barely any knowledge of cars, Renee started rally racing at age 56. Why? Because she wanted to! It was on her bucket list and she just knew she had to do it. Renee has been rally racing for 8 years now. She’s competed in almost all continents of the world including North America, Australia, South America, Asia & Europe, and Africa. Antarctica, the only continent left, is just a matter of time! As if racing around the world wasn’t enough, Renee founded her own racing company, Valkyrie Racing, which has led to a non-profit organization focused on ending child sex trafficking in at-risk women and children around the world. Valkyrie Gives contributes 100% of their gifts to carefully selected projects that positively impact the lives of women and children at risk of sexual trafficking. If you’ve ever said, “I’m too old for….”, this is the episode for you!

Rosie, The Riveter

Although Rosie may seem like a cliché image when representing feminism and/or women empowerment, the history of her creation and the women she has represented, historically and presently, deserve recognition. In the 1940’s, during WWII, Rosie’s image was used in ads to recruit women into traditionally male-dominated jobs because American men had been recruited into the war and the jobs, they left behind were left vacated.

Michèle Mouton- The Rallying Trailblazer

Her story of perseverance and determination as a rally race car driver throughout the 70’s and 80’s is truly inspiring. Against odds like doubt from her male counterparts, doubt over her driving skills, personal challenges, and car/sponsorship issues, she secured four WRC victories, hundreds of stage wins, record times at Pikes Peak International Hill Climb, and she’s served in various ambassadorial roles throughout racing.

Gender Pay Gap

As research shifts away from the assumption that women are at fault for their own low pay, it’s moving towards the reality that there are obstacles to equal pay that stand in the way of even the most talented and driven women.  And while that might not exactly be news for women in the workforce, it is an idea that stands to revolutionize the way women work and receive pay in the workforce.  Oddly enough, one of the fields that has the greatest potential to capitalize off of female inclusive work environments is the automotive and skilled trades industry.
