The first Femcanic

Meet Jayme B.

"My interest and passion for cars started when I was about six years old with my mom's restoration project. She had a 1973 Pontiac GTO that still lives in her garage. My step dad rebuilt the engine and my job was to clean parts in a gasoline-filled porcelain bin while he worked."

"I still think pink clothing looks better stained with grease."

At 19 she bought a 1967 Pontiac GTO convertible from a man in Texas. She and her step dad drove down from Ohio in an old Dodge truck with no AC and vinyl seats. Over four years they turned that rust bucket full of dry grass into a full frame-off restoration. It was her first apprenticeship in classic car restoration.

Michèle Mouton: the rallying trailblazer

Her rival Walter Röhrl said he wouldn't accept losing the championship to her "because she is a woman." She won four WRC rallies anyway, plus hundreds of stage wins and record times at Pikes Peak.

She faced doubt from male rivals, questions about her driving, personal challenges and car and sponsorship problems. She kept going. She began as a co-driver in her early 20s, and it was her father who pushed her into the driver's seat. If she wanted to keep rallying, he told her, she'd need to drive. She has since served in many ambassador roles in racing.

Rosie the Riveter "We Can Do It!" poster
65%of the WWII aviation workforce

Rosie, the Riveter

During WWII, women kept the country running as welders, riveters and engine builders. They were still paid far less than the men.

Read her story

The famous "We Can Do It!" poster was only displayed for two weeks during the war, and few Americans saw it at the time. Rosalind P. Walter, who drilled rivets into Corsair fighter planes on the night shift in Connecticut, inspired the 1942 song "Rosie the Riveter." These women were also early pioneers in the fight for equal pay.

Graphic about the gender pay gap for women in the trades
79¢earned by U.S. women for every dollar a man makes

The gender pay gap

Fewer than 2% of automotive, skilled trades and motorsports workers are women. For the few who make it in, chances to out-earn men are rare. That may be about to change.

The gap is wider for women of color and for mothers. The industry is also overlooking women as customers. Women are responding by creating their own spaces to work, learn and spend money, and those spaces stand to close the gap in the trades and in the workforce as a whole.
